WHO WAS DIHYA?

A female military and religious leader from an Amazigh tribe in North Africa, Dihya has a long history going back 14 centuries. Widely known as “The Berber Queen”, it is said she led the North African resistance to the Arab-Islamic invasion of that region in the 7th century A.D.

A steadfast warrior as well as a merciful leader who liberated thousands of slaves, Dihya is known over most of North Africa as a heroine; a woman who in today’s terms would be called 'liberated', even a ‘feminist'.

Historically, women played a strong role in Amazigh society, and today many still use the image of Dihya to represent strength, resistance and female empowerment.
